The 2015 VMAs were entertaining, to say at the least. Although most of it surrounded host Miley Cyrus, with an unexpected camera flash, Nicki Minaj calling her out, and her alleged racist comments while talking about Snoop Dogg, it was definitely a broadcast to remember whether or not it was for the right reasons. But, it was Kanye West who would eventually steal the spotlight. During his acceptance speech for the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, West emphasized creative ideas over creative people, what it’s like for him to be hated and loved, and even announced his presidency for 2020. However, according to VMA producer Van Toffler, West was also supposed to perform.

“We originally thought Kanye was going to do a medley,” Toffler explained to Billboard. “Then, about an act before, we found out that he might not do music and just speak — but we had to be prepared for both, so we had a track cued up.” Read Toffler’s statement in its entirety here.
